Heartfelt thanks to Mike Meno and others at the Gazette newspaper who understood the scope of this project before anyone else did. Here's a link to the article that Mike Meno wrote in January, 2008. I received a lot of support and encouragement from Karen MacPherson, children's librarian at Takoma Park Maryland Library, as this project was getting off the ground. The people who deserve most credit for this project are the visionaries who who put into place the Maryland student service learning requirement -- way back in the early 1990's. We need to expand service learning so that all students are involved in supporting their communities, even doing work to pay for school construction.
